With Christmas television commercials and store displays competing for children's attention, the "reason for the season" can take a back seat. These mini-programs provide balance by focusing on the true meaning of Christmas through Scripture readings, narration and singing that focus on a different biblical character each week. Children sing a new verse of "The Advent Song" (to the tune of "Good Christian Friends Rejoice") and slowly build the Nativity by adding figures to the scene: Week 1 - Mary, Joseph, and animals. Week 2 - Angel. Week 3 - Shepherds and sheep. Week 4 - Wise men and camels. The scripts' short lengths make them easy to include as a Sunday school opening or as the children's sermonette as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, the traditional Advent candlelighting. The children complete the Nativity scene by adding the Christ child during a Christmas Eve service or as an opening to the children's Christmas program.
