Did you know the Bible says some form of “Do not be afraid” over 100 times? This is the Christmas story, bracketed by the fears of a young girl playing Mary in her church’s Christmas play. “Stage fright” doesn’t touch it—Melanie has a full-blown anxiety disorder! In the midst of a panic attack, she wants to quit. Then the real Mary emerges from the shadows of the past. Simply a calm, blue-robed presence? Not even close! We revere Mary for her obedience to God, but we don’t often reflect on the reality of her circumstances. What a terrifying thing God asked her to do! The angel’s shocking visit, traveling for the census, giving birth for the first time, King Herod’s mission to kill baby boys, losing Jesus at the temple, and most painful of all—his Crucifixion. Mary learned obedience despite fear. Melanie realizes that her fear parallels Mary’s. She rejoins the cast—not “cured,” just reassured of God’s unwavering presence. This production allows for diverse ages and acting abilities. Originally written as a lead-in for a live Nativity.
